In addition to outstanding scientific and legal qualifications, most of the group have hands on experience of research and development within industry.

This provides a solid foundation for developing successful strategies to support the commercial objectives of our clients.

Ray Charig
Ray Charig - Partner

BSc (Hons), Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, European Patent Attorney, Member of the Licensing Executives Society and FICPI.

Ray read physics at Southampton University. He worked a number of years for a major electronics company in research and development of semiconductor devices and integrated circuits, before joining Potter Clarkson in 1990. He became a partner in 1998.

While in industrial research and development, Ray also gained considerable experience in computer-aided manufacturing systems and has maintained a particular interest in computer technology, information systems and software applied in a wide range of technical fields such as telecommunication systems, networks, medical physics and automation of business processes. He has also acted for a number of successful start-up companies to define and develop patenting strategies and new patent portfolios.

Saiful Khan
Saiful Khan - Partner

MEng, PhD, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, European Patent Attorney, Chartered Engineer, Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Saiful is a Chartered Engineer who holds a doctorate from the University of Cambridge (Materials Science), and an M.Eng degree from Imperial College, London (Mechanical Engineering). Saiful won scholarships for both his undergraduate and doctorate degrees, and spent some two years in Industry working for a multinational oil corporation.

Saiful entered the patent profession in 1998, joining a large private practice firm in London. After three years, he joined a leading multinational telecommunications corporation where he progressed to become an IPR portfolio manager. Saiful joined Potter Clarkson in October 2004, and became a partner in 2007.

Saiful practises in a number of technical specialities within the Designs and Engineering and Computer Software Groups. Accordingly, Saiful handles a varied portfolio ranging from mechanical/materials subject-matter to telecommunications, video coding, image processing, and computing. He has extensive experience of prosecuting patent applications before numerous patent offices. Saiful also represents his clients at hearings before the EPO, and has done so before all three locations (Berlin, The Hague and Munich). Saiful has also presented papers on various aspects of EP patent law in the US, Europe and Asia.

 

David Clark
David Clark - Senior Associate

BEng, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, European Patent Attorney.

David read electronic engineering at the University of Warwick. He was sponsored throughout his degree course by a multinational telecommunications company, and spent a year out from university working in a software development department of the company.

Before joining Potter Clarkson in 2008, David experienced working for two British private practice firms where he passed both the British and European patent attorney qualifying examinations.

David has extensive experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications before numerous patent offices, portfolio management, hearings at the EPO, as well as being involved in appeals from the UKIPO to the High Court in relation to the patentability of computer implemented inventions.

During his career as a patent attorney David has been exposed to a wide variety of technologies, including mobile telephony platforms and applications, RFID systems, optical systems, numerous software implemented inventions, as well as mechanical inventions.

 

David Pearce
David Pearce - Senior Associate

MEng (Oxon), MSc (Management of IP), PhD (Metallurgy & Materials), Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, European Patent Attorney.

David read electronic and structural materials engineering at Exeter College, University of Oxford, graduating in 1992. He carried out research into high temperature oxide ceramics at the Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Materials at the University of Birmingham, leading to a PhD in 1995. David worked as a researcher in functional ceramic materials from 1995 to 2001, specialising in piezoelectric materials. He joined a Cambridge technology start-up company in 2001 to develop and exploit patented technology based on this research work.

David obtained an MSc in Management of Intellectual Property from Queen Mary, University of London, in 2004 and he joined Potter Clarkson in 2005.

Mark Graham
Mark Graham - Assistant

BSc (Hons), Student Member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys.

Mark read physics at the University of Warwick studying a combination of physics, electronics and programming. He has spent a substantial period of his life studying abroad in Asia.

Mark joined Potter Clarkson in 2007 and works with clients in the engineering and electronics fields.

Craig Brownlie
Craig Brownlie - Assistant

BSc (Hons), PhD, Student Member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, Member of the Institute of Physics.

Craig read chemical physics at Glasgow University before obtaining a PhD in solid state physics from the same university. During his PhD, Craig was awarded the JK Hunter Memorial Prize for best first year report, and the Thomson Experimental Prize for his research.

After leaving university, Craig entered the patent profession, working for a small private practice firm in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.  He joined Potter Clarkson in 2009 and works in the Electronics & Computing Group.

 

William Murphy
William Murphy - Assistant

MChemPhys, DPhil, Student Member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys.

William studied chemical physics at the University of Edinburgh, focusing on condensed matter physics. During the course of his degree he spent a year working for a chemicals company developing new diagnostic techniques.

He then moved to the University of Oxford to pursue a doctorate in laser driven shock physics. Whilst there he presented his research at a number of conferences and authored several research papers.

William joined Potter Clarkson in 2009 and works in the Electronics & Computing Group.
