About Us

And how we can help

We’re Potter Clarkson, an award-winning, top-tier firm of European patent and trade mark attorneys and IP lawyers, and one of the largest full service intellectual property practices in Europe.  We have offices in the UK and continental Europe.
Advising clients around the globe on intellectual property rights across a variety of industry sectors, Potter Clarkson is well-known for handling some of the most complex and challenging patent and trade mark cases, and is particularly well-regarded for its successful prosecution, opposition and appeal work. Our proven excellence has made it the European firm of choice for several global giants, household names, universities and SMEs, as well as smaller companies and individuals all of whom wish to benefit commercially from their investment into intellectual property. We are here to help with our wide-ranging technical expertise, experience and business knowledge.
Founded in 1889, the firm employs over 60 qualified professionals and more than 90 paralegals, administrators and support staff.  Originating in Nottingham, Potter Clarkson also has offices in London, Munich, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Lund.  As a European firm, we are able to provide all relevant IP services within the UK and continental Europe. Furthermore, we can assist with all international IP issues through our associations with top attorney firms worldwide - we therefore deliver the ideal combination of a truly international service with expert local knowledge.
As well as being traditional patent and trade mark attorneys, we have moved ahead of many such firms to create a wider and full IP legal offering by employing IP lawyers (solicitors) to enhance the existing team of attorneys who undertake IP litigation. Only a small percentage of patent attorneys qualify as litigators in the UK and even fewer qualify as patent attorney advocates of which the firm boasts one. As a result, the firm’s Dispute Resolution and Commercial team, consisting of eight attorney litigators/attorney advocate and six IP solicitors (three at partner level), and three paralegals, offers the full range of litigation services in all English courts of law, as well as all non-contentious, commercial legal services associated with IP.  This 17-strong professional team, which is able to call on the IP experience of multi-disciplined attorneys, provides a comprehensive and seamlessly complete range of IP services, putting us in the vanguard of the profession’s evolution for the benefit of our clients.

As evidenced by such respected legal directories as Managing Intellectual Property (MIP), Legal 500 and Intellectual Asset Management (IAM), where the firm is in the top rankings of each, many of our attorneys and solicitors are recognised as leaders in their field, each bringing outstanding technical qualifications and experience.
We realise that our continuing success cannot rely merely on our excellent reputation; we aim to provide our clients with a personalised service which is not only professional but also reliable. To enable us to do this we utilise the latest technology and sophisticated software, much of which is developed in-house.
We strongly believe that we have the professional and technical skills required to meet your requirements, and we can work strategically with you to help you achieve the best possible commercial outcome from your investment in your IP, for the benefit of your business.

Every business we work with has a different set of challenges and objectives, so we don’t subscribe to a ‘one-size-fits-all’ mentality. Instead of a standard package, we offer bespoke, innovative IP strategies based on in-depth research and understanding of your commercial environment. Working in many sectors gives us the solid foundation on which to understand your business and goals. Regular interaction and cross communication between our patent, trade mark and legal departments provides you with experience and expertise in commercial advice and support on technological innovations.
Our aim is to make every client relationship long-term and mutually beneficial – which is why we appoint a partner to each client, to oversee projects and be a point of contact. Our flexible, respectful approach to collaboration keeps clients coming back to us year after year, and our famously efficient staff stay just as long.
We also offer IP news, training, and events for clients and other interested parties, including seminars and webinars. Our aim is to keep you abreast of all you need to know about IP - and certainly anything which will affect you. Find out what’s happening at the moment on our Latest page.
We love what we do, and look forward to working with you.

We are very proud of the fact that both our expertise and service have been independently acknowledged by those experienced in the IP profession.
To be regarded as a top-tier firm by such knowledgeable, independent organisations as Legal 500 and MIP, is terrific. Nothing beats, if we may say it, a well-deserved pat on the back!
We have also achieved three ISO accreditations which evidence the high level of service provision, information security and environmental awareness that we have. Very few UK specialist IP firms have achieved all three of these internationally recognised accreditations.
In further recognition of our efforts to keep all data secure in this challenging internet world, we have also been accredited with Cyber Essentials, the UK Government-endorsed scheme to encourage organisations to adopt good practice in information security.  The assessment is independently verified.
So, it is independently acknowledged that not only do we have top-tier expertise, but we also deliver that expertise with a top-tier service too.

In addition to all that, we are proud to be one of over 100 patent and trade mark firms to have so far signed up to the IPInclusive charter which came into force back in 2016. The charter was established to promote equality, diversity and inclusion within the IP sector.
