Existing medicinal products are promising targets for development as therapeutic agents for new medical indications (so-called 'drug repurposing') because their safety as drugs will already have been validated in clinical trials. Thus some of the risks associated with developing a new medicine may be avoided. Further, new uses of medicinal substance sometimes become apparent during clicnical trials - with Pfizer's Viagra being perhaps the most notorious example.
