The Midlands Leads the Way in Innovation - Official!
13 January 2015
The East and West Midlands regions together lead the way in innovation according to figures obtained from the UK Intellectual Property Office.
Potter Clarkson LLP have obtained the figures which show that the number of patent applications filed by companies in the East and West Midlands has increased in recent years, whereas filings by companies located in other regions of the UK have declined.
When an average for 2011 and 2012 is compared with an average for 2012 and 2013, there is a marked difference. Whereas the East Midlands increased by 4% and the West Midlands by 5%, all other regions experienced a reduction with the North East and Yorkshire seeing the deepest falls of 9% and 7% respectively.
Andrew Argyle, Practice Director at Potter Clarkson, commented, "Depending on the industry sector, it is generally accepted that the numbers of patent applications filed indicate the level of innovation attributable to a company, region or country. On this basis, the Midlands is becoming more innovative, whereas the rest of the UK is losing impetus."
Unfortunately, the figures do not reveal the individual companies or other institutions, such as universities, that are making the filings.
"These results are encouraging and place the Midlands as a key region for even further investment in innovation," said Mr Argyle.
