Assistant - Patents

James works with a range of clients across a variety of disciplines, from medtech start-ups and SMEs to multinational telecommunications firms and financial services providers.

He specialises in obtaining patents for his clients in challenging fields such as fintech, software and quantum computation, and he has been involved in managing and prosecuting global intellectual property portfolios at patent offices around the world. In addition to his routine drafting and prosecution work, James has also helped clients achieve commercial success by advising on intellectual property strategy and contentious matters including freedom to operate, due diligence and oppositions to European patents.

James joined Potter Clarkson in 2020, having previously worked for another leading intellectual property law firm since joining the profession in 2017.

Education

James obtained a first class master’s degree in theoretical physics from University College London in 2013, and he was later awarded a PhD in physics from the same institution.  He published several peer reviewed journal articles during his PhD, with his doctoral research focusing on methods for performing fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Awards & recognition 

James was awarded a place on the University College London Dean’s List in 2013 for his outstanding academic performance during his degree, and he was also awarded the Burhop Prize for best fourth year performance in physics the same year.

Interests

In his spare time, James enjoys photography and spending time with his wife and young children.
