Ian has over 25 years’ experience of patent prosecution and strategy in working with small, medium and large companies and academic institutions, ranging from spin-outs to multinationals. He has particular expertise in oppositions and has handled over 200 opposition and appeal hearings before the European Patent Office. Current areas of special interest include biochemistry, catalysis, enzymes, lipids, fats and oils, formulations, nutrition, bulk chemicals, pharmacology and polymer chemistry. Ian has acted as an expert witness in national litigation proceedings and has been involved in carrying out a technology audit at a leading UK university.
Ian obtained a masters in Chemistry from the University of Oxford, and then worked in research for a multinational chemical company before entering the patent profession in 1990. He worked in private practice in London and Bristol before joining Potter Clarkson in 1999.
Ian joined the Partnership in 2001.
