Joanna is a fully qualified UK and European Patent Attorney who has been a member of the Chemistry team since 2007.
Joanna has particular expertise in patent and registered design protection for medical technologies such as medical devices and processes, which includes advising clients on IP strategy, drafting applications, coordinating foreign filing programs and preparing freedom to operate opinions. This has involved challenging third-party rights using the EPO Opposition system, the UK IPO Opinions service and by filing anonymous observations.
Joanna also has experience working with large, medium and small medical device companies and medical device startups. She has also worked with surgeons whose first hand field experience has led to the development of innovative medical devices.
Working within the chemistry group, Joanna also has experience working in other areas including chemicals, formulations, polymers and pharmaceuticals.
Prior to joining the profession, Joanna obtained a Masters degree in chemistry with medicinal chemistry from St Andrews University. She obtained two prizes in her final year, one of which was the Organon prize for best dissertation. She was also awarded the Gray essay prize for her work on biodegradable polymers. Joanna completed an industrial year placement with Reckitt Benckiser working within the healthcare formulation department.
Outside of work, Joanna is a very keen sportsperson who spends her time either playing hockey or training for triathlons. Her next challenge is to attempt a half iron man triathlon.
