Consultant - Patent Attorney

Colin has more than thirty years' experience securing patent protection for inventions in the chemical and medical device fields.

He is particularly skilled in conducting proceedings before the European Patent Office Opposition Division and Boards of Appeal, having handled well over 150 cases.   

After starting his career in the research team of a large multinational corporation as a metabolism chemist, Colin trained to become a patent attorney and joined the patent profession in 1986. 

Since then, he has worked both in industry and private practice, spending time at the Ministry of Defence and Unilever. He joined Potter Clarkson in 1997, becoming a partner in 1999. In 2013, he joined the management board, and from January 2014 until December 2018 he was managing partner.  

He has lectured for the Centre for International Intellectual Property Studies and on behalf of the European Patent Office on the patenting of chemical inventions. His client relationships take him around the world, with particular emphasis on the US market.

Personal care compositions, foodstuffs, packaging, refrigerants, petrochemicals, metallurgy and medical devices including stents, catheters, heart valves and dental equipment 

Education

Colin read chemistry at the University of Bristol.

BSc (Hons), UK and European Patent Attorney

Member of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA).

Interests

Colin enjoys spending time with his family and playing (as well as watching) cricket and golf.
