UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) official fee increases

06 February 2018

From 6 April 2018 the UKIPO will increase its official fees for patent applications and granted patents. Most changes will be routine increases to existing fees. However, new fees for specifications with more than 25 claims and/or more than 35 pages of description will also be introduced. Fees will be set at £20 for each excess claim and £10 for each excess page.
Applicants who expect to file large specifications within the near future, or who already have pending applications for which search and/or examination requests have not yet been made, may be able to avoid potentially substantial claims and page fees by filing the application and/or paying the official search and examination fees before 6 April 2018.

For specifications filed on or after 6 April 2018, the new claims fees will be payable at the same time as the search fees, while the new pages fees will be payable at the same time as the examination fees.
For specifications that go to grant with a larger number of claims than were paid for when requesting the search, the additional claims will each be subject to a grant fee of £20, while any additional description pages above the number paid for on requesting examination will also be subject to a grant fee of £10 per page.
It may be possible to amend the claims prior to requesting the search to avoid claims fees, although this requires the UKIPO’s consent. It may also be possible to reduce the number of pages to avoid page fees prior to requesting examination. Further details of the changes to be introduced from 6 April 2018 are available from the UKIPO’s website.
