How We Live Our Values: Excellence

I’ve always liked finding out how things work, and I’m naturally inquisitive about all types of technology. People who’ve worked with me will recognise this, as I’m always asking questions to get to the crux of a technical issue. This has really helped me in all aspects of my work, whether it's working with inventors to capture new ideas or finding the key issue that makes a patent claim valid when assessing validity post-grant. For me, excellence starts with asking the right questions, because getting to the detail is what leads to better outcomes.

In My Own Words

I remember the first time I went to the EPO to defend a client’s patent during oral proceedings. The atmosphere and intensity of the hearing energised me. I knew I wanted this type of work to be part of my practice, and fortunately I’ve been able to do that through representing clients in hundreds of opposition proceedings.

That first-hand experience has given me a framework for understanding what makes a good patent, and how an invention should be described and protected. I now use that framework to support clients, whether they’re drafting their first application or filing their hundredth opposition against a competitor.
