How We Live Our Values: Collaboration

My role at Potter Clarkson gives me the opportunity to support a wide range of clients in protecting and strengthening their brands. Alongside helping clients achieve their commercial goals, I also support colleagues through the firm’s mentoring scheme and contribute to the wider community by offering free advice to members of the public and small business owners through the CITMA Clinic Scheme. Each of these roles involves working closely with others to share insight, solve problems, and achieve better outcomes together.

In My Own Words

I have always been very brand aware, enjoying good marketing and the messages that brands can convey and their impact on consumer behaviour. As I also have a love of the English language and studied law at university, it felt natural to explore the legal side of brands as a profession.

Like many trade mark attorneys, I was initially unaware of the professional route to qualification, but I was fortunate to begin in a junior role in the IP team of a law firm. I was lucky to work on interesting cases and had the support of colleagues and mentors who helped me qualify and build my experience.

One aspect of trade marks and IP law I find particularly appealing is its dynamic nature. The law develops quickly through new legislation, case law, technologies and challenges, many of which are influenced by public policy. Every case and client presents unique issues, often legally complex, which gives me the chance to really explore a business and understand what makes its brand distinctive.

It is also incredibly rewarding to gain early insight into new brands and products before they go to market, seeing and shaping the ideas that will form the brand before the public does.
