Saiful Khan

Partner - Patent Attorney

An internationally respected attorney with around 25 years’ IP experience encompassing both in-house and private practice, Saiful brings a wealth of knowledge to his work.

Although he practises in a number of technical specialities within the designs and engineering and electronics and computing groups, he has developed his practice, and that of the firm, primarily in relation to software inventions, including those using artificial intelligence. A large part of his work has been directly advising and representing the interests of multinational corporations, but he does support SMEs and individual inventors.

With extensive experience of prosecuting patent applications before numerous international patent offices, including interviews with USPTO examiners, Saiful is adept at devising global patent strategies for his clients. His work has been used in successful global patent licensing and litigation discussions, and he has represented the interests of leading global patent holders in face-to-face patent assertion discussions.

Saiful also has considerable international experience, frequently representing both the firm and the UK and European patent attorney profession as part of his work on the CIPA International Liaison Committee. In addition to being a tutor for the CIPA oral proceedings course for qualified attorneys (he has represented his clients at hearings before the EPO in Berlin, The Hague and Munich), Saiful devises and delivers workshops on various aspects of UK and EP patent law throughout the world.

He joined Potter Clarkson in late 2004, following periods in-house at Nokia Corporation and a large London private practice firm. He became a partner in 2007 and has supported the firm’s internal operations in various capacities, including being a member of the Board for the best part of a decade. He is a Board member of IPInclusive, and CIPA’s D&I committee, to help support inclusivity across the IP profession.
