Tony Proctor

Partner & Board Member - Patent Attorney

Tony specialises in patent matters relating to pharmaceutical inventions, while also working with clients in the broader area of chemistry, such as in the area of materials chemistry.

He works with a wide range of clients, from university spin-outs to multi-national companies, providing him with valuable insight into the needs of businesses at each stage of development. 

Tony has extensive experience in patent drafting, European and global patent prosecution, freedom-to-operate and patentability analyses, due diligence, portfolio management, and attacking and defending patents via the European opposition and appeals procedure. He has handled the filing of numerous applications for supplementary protection certificates (SPCs) throughout Europe. 

Tony is also a qualified Patent Attorney Litigator and is experienced in handling litigation matters in the UK High Court.

With a passion for supporting the needs of businesses operating in the pharmaceutical sector, Tony works closely with his clients in order to balance their IP strategy with the demands of the associated regulatory procedures. He has delivered talks and seminars on wide-ranging topics, and to audiences as far afield as India and the US, and across Scandinavia. Although primarily based in Nottingham, UK, he regularly works at Potter Clarkson's Stockholm and Copenhagen offices.

Tony studied for an undergraduate degree in Chemistry with Biosciences, followed by a PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, both at Cardiff University. Following his doctoral studies, Tony undertook a period of postdoctoral research at the University of Nottingham (funded by Cancer Research UK), developing novel kinase inhibitors as potential therapeutic agents, before joining Potter Clarkson in 2007.

 

Specialisms

Pharmaceutical sector - including chemical entities, pharmaceutical formulations and drug delivery technologies, new medical uses of known therapeutic agents, and medical diagnostic kits – as well as chemical processes and novel materials.

Education

Tony obtained a first-class degree in chemistry with biosciences, before completing his doctorate in synthetic organic chemistry, both at Cardiff University. 

Tony qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2012, and as a Chartered Patent Attorney shortly after. In 2017, he qualified as a Patent Attorney Litigator (PAL) and was awarded a Higher Courts Litigation Certificate, allowing him to conduct litigation in the High Court and the Court of Appeal, in addition to having a right of audience in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (IPEC).
