John is a highly regarded trade mark attorney, with over 30 years’ experience.

Adept at managing global trade mark portfolios, John provides clients with comprehensive advice on all aspects of protecting their brands but is a particular specialist in clearance searches and prosecuting and defending oppositions, including negotiating and drafting settlement agreements.  

Prior to joining Potter Clarkson as a partner in 1999, John was managing director of Markforce Associates, a firm of trade mark attorneys and a division of global brand consultancy, Interbrand. He also gained experience in industry working in-house for international telecommunications company, BT Plc. 

John also served on Potter Clarkson’s board of management between 2010-2012.

Education

John studied law at the University of West England, and qualified as a Chartered UK and European Trade Mark Attorney in 1990. He was awarded the John Parker Award for obtaining the highest total marks in his Intermediate year.

John has been listed as an IP Star by Managing Intellectual Property for the years 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.  

Interests

In his spare time, John is involved in his local church, enjoys reading, playing tennis and coastal walks in Cornwall. He is also a season ticket holder at Nottingham Forest football club, but says that's something he mostly endures rather than enjoys!
