Douglas McPherson
Douglas has over 30 years’ experience in marketing and business development. At Potter Clarkson, his responsibilities range from supporting attorneys with business development to shaping the firm’s service offering and managing its industry and professional partnerships.
Doug has spent his career in sales and marketing within the professional services sector. He began at Intellectual Property Publishing, where he was responsible for sales, marketing and publishing across Patent World, Trademark World and Copyright World, as well as their accompanying IP directory. After the sale of that business to Lloyd’s of London, he moved into the maritime sector as commercial director of Lloyd’s Maritime Intelligence Unit. He later co-founded Size 10½ Boots, a business development agency working exclusively with professional services firms.
As head of business development at Potter Clarkson, Doug works directly with attorneys to shape and deliver business plans. This can involve coaching, creating marketing materials, product development, or helping teams identify and apply ideas that work. His long career, including co-owning a digital and design agency, gives him the breadth of experience to contribute wherever it's most useful.
Doug’s focus is ensuring the firm is always positioned to deliver the specialist IP services clients and partners need to maximise the value of their innovation.

How We Live Our Values
At Potter Clarkson, delivering meaningful commercial results for our clients is always the goal. We achieve this by being ambitious, constantly striving to improve and innovate. We achieve it through collaboration, working closely with colleagues and clients to find the best way forward. We achieve it through excellence, maintaining the highest standards in everything we do. And we achieve it through respect, building the trust and integrity that underpin every successful partnership.
In My Own Words
The most rewarding part of my job is seeing a happy client, knowing we’ve made a real difference to their business by helping their ideas, inventions and brands reach their full commercial potential.
I also enjoy working with our partner organisations because I know we add real value for their members by showing them, practically not theoretically, how they can turn great ideas into great businesses.
